The forests blanketing the North Carolina Highlands inspired this group of paintings. Traces of the space, light, textures and sounds I experience when walking through a forest are integrated into the work. If musicians and poets have “muses”, then the forest plays that role when I work.
My paintings are not about making the subject look realistic. Painting is an expression of my visual ideas. Just as a forest cycles through growth and decay, I build up and break down a painting until I am satisfied with it. The result is an image that defines a singular experience. For me, painting is where vision, thought and activity collide, imperfect, but candid in concept and execution.
